This is without a doubt, the best place to party for New Year's out of any event on the planet. I really haven't been very many places at that time of the year, but if you think you can handle more than a million people, all clad in white, amidst a sea of lights and smiling faces, this is the place to be. From start to finish, the trip was an experience! I was offered the opportunity to fly for free to Rio de Janeiro on an Air Canada buddy pass with about 7-10 days notice. Ever the adventurous soul, I managed to obtain a passport, a Brasilian visa, and time off work in the short span over the holidays (Christmas 2001). My buddy Mick and I flew standby (separately) to Rio de Janeiro. We stayed at a beautiful little apartment on Rue Visconde de Piraja, in the center of the Ipanema district of Rio. The beaches are beautiful, the culture is distinct and appealing. The people are entrepreneurial and and oh-so welcoming! They are known as Cariocas, by the way... The trip was only to last a week, but the nature of a buddy pass makes it difficult to have a guaranteed flight home. As a result, we got stuck in Saõ Paolo for about a week. It's the world's second-largest city with over 20 million people. What a stone jungle! P.S. I'm backpacking back to South America at the end of August, 2002. |
