STORIES FROM THE iMBA AT YORK UNIVERSITY

SPRING BREAK AT THE CONCORDIA LIBRARY

It's not quite Florida, that's for sure.  I had originally planned to spend this week in Florida with my buddy Majed Roz, but Schulich had other plans for me!  I have the first draft of a research paper on project finance due next week and I'm somewhat ashamed to admit that this is really the first time I've ever written a research paper.  They say that business students often finish an undergraduate degree not knowing how to write.  This is true of me, at least in the analytical sense.  I always considered myself to be a decent writer, but never really made a distinction between creative and analytical writing.  My motivation behind taking this course was to challenge myself to find out what the difference is and to develop my critical thinking and analytical writing skills.  I know these skills are key to getting ahead in the business world, so I think the short-term pain I'm experiencing this week is worth the long-term gain.

A Schulich teacher gave me some great advice last semester.  He told me that I should pick an industry that interests me and learn as much about it as possible.  He advised me that many MBA students graduate with only a very general idea of what they would like to do - and that is to earn a lot of money!!  The secret is to pick a field and develop an expertise in it.  That is to say, get really really good at one or two subjects so that you can really add value wherever you go and whatever you decide to do.  So, with this in mind I am looking forward to spending another two full days at Concordia's Webster Library!  P.S. No answer on the Miami interview yet!

PUSH YOUR LIMITS.  SLEEP WHEN YOU'RE DEAD.
