Mick Discepola and I went to New York City for the weekend of August 17th & 18th, 2002. Kind of a last-minute thing, we bought a bus ticket with Voyages Belmar and headed down on Friday night. We wanted to save as much $$ as possible so we said screw the hotel room and we'd just party all night. This meant staying awake for about 33 hours (from bus arrival till bus departure).

Arriving Saturday morning at 5am, this is a photo of the hotel that was included as part of the real weekend package we decided not to take. I knew beforehand it was the Carter anyways.
Can you say la cucaracha??
Really. We have photographic proof.
We asked to see the rooms just for fun, but the front desk clerk said we had to pay first... :)

The Wall Street district at 7am on a Saturday morning is deserted and serene. We found it to be the cleanest part of the entire city. We contemplated crashing out on the bench right then and there and we still had 31 hours to go. We were exhausted 'cause we spent the whole night awake on the bus talking to two Ukrainian chiquitas from Brossard.

We actually ended up in Battery Park, facing the Statue of Liberty. We grabbed a comfortable-looking bench on the boardwalk and slept for about an hour or so. It was more of a tanning session than anything else, as it was BAKING HOT in New York that weekend.

American patriotism at its peak after September 11th. The first photo is the New York Stock Exchange, draped in American flags. The second shows Ground Zero from the vantage point of a subway entrance. That large black building in the middle of the pic has been condemned. The third shot is of a shrine to those lost in the tragedy of the attacks.

Saturday afternoon. Mick and I cruised the streets and managed to mooch a free shower from some 24/7 gym on 14th.

Once we were freshened up, we asked around and were directed to a bar called "The Village Idiot" on the corner of 14th & 9th Ave, just past the Tribeca/SoHo district. What a dive! What we didn't expect was to get such a lively bartender! A pint of blonde beer was only US$3. In addition, there was taped footage of some Spring Break wet t-shirt contest on the big-screen TV. If that weren't enough, well, let's just say that the barmaid knew how to keep her customers entertained. Anyways, the photos tell the story...

The weekend of June 28th, 29th & 30th, and July 1st, 2002 was, by all accounts, an interesting one.
(***snap back to it! World Cup Weekend!***)

It began with a swim in the rooftop pool of the Hotel de la Montagne in Montréal on a beautifully hot summer Friday afternoon. (Actually, the pic above was taken in California, but come on... don't have a pic of the sky-high pool so I had to improvise for effect). :)

Later on, my buddy Peter Giannopoulos and I enjoyed a delicious home-cooked Mexican-style meal, cooked by tres mexicanas verdades. I ended up with about 4 hours of sleep that night. (Make no inference from this statement!!!) :) :)
You can see pics of the Sexy Mexis by clicking here.

The next day (Saturday) was a scorcher too, so lying by the pool became the day's activity. I got invited to an impromptu barbeque by my friend Roxy Benharroch, so I headed there in the PM with Jerry Garnes and Ruth Tikkanen. The pics came out shabby so I won't bore you with those.

In the evening, friends of mine came in from New Brunswick to party, so we ended up doing the terrace thing with them at Sir Winston's, drinking beer and sangria all night long. Can't go wrong with that!
The first pic shows Xiomara (a Sandinista descendant from Nicaragua) and friend (Xio? what's her name...?) . The second is Yvan working his magic on a bride-to-be enjoying her bachelorette party. The third shows myself, Yvan, and Jerry. The fourth pic, we have from L to R: (Xiomara, unknown, Tanelle?, Shane, Don, Yvan, Naomi, me, and Jerry). These pictures, by the way, were snapped at Sir Winston Churchill's Pub.

At 2am I found myself dancing on Crescent Street, waving a Brasilian flag and talking to strangers.

Starting to like Brasil?
It's an amazing country, such a vibrant culture, entrepreneurial spirit, and beautiful women!
Click here for stories and pics from my trip to Rio!

My buddies Jerry & Yvan and I hooked up with a bachelorette party (yeah, another one!) and partied until last call with a group of smiling, sexy, late-twenty-something-year-old women. (Most of them Brasilian or Portuguese in origin.)

After another 2 hours of sleep, my buddy Jerry and I headed off to Circles, a Portuguese bar on the Main for some hardcore Sunday morning partying for the final match of the 2002 World Cup football game between Germany and Brasil. Wouldn't you know it but half of the bachelorette party was there... :)
The first shot shows my friend Stacey and I. She's just a little hungover. :) The second and third pics show the eruption of joy when the game clock ticked its last.

After Brasil won the game, fans poured into the streets of Montreal overjoyed at their nation's victory in this world-class football event. You can see how much fun the party was!!

That night, after Jerry and I recovered by the pool, we hit a barbecue at Lucy's. After some hot dogs, good conversation, and a few Smirnoff Ice, we were good to go.

Finished off that night with a movie with two of the mexicanas. The left picture is Jerry and I with Cristina Guarneri (from Monterrey), and the pic on the right is Jerry with Cris and Mariana Ramirez(from Mexico City). Jerry...? Was it the Sum of All Fears? Can't even remember anymore, what a blur.
Jerry says the movie was Insomnia. He's right. Man, I gotta stop drinking so much BEER.

On the morning of Canada Day (Monday), 14 or 15 of us piled into 5 different cars and a motorcycle and we headed off to Ottawa for what is becoming an annual ritual. We arrived a bit late, but made up for lost time by drinking heavily and getting into the spirit right away. Ottawa is definitely the coolest place to party in on our country's birthday.

Check out the pictures from this year, and also from last year (far below).

Here's our entire crew in one shot, taken not too far from Parliament Hill.
From L to R (in order of heads): (Shane Eastwood, Katynna Gill, Ida, Melissa, Yvan, Paulina Ramirez, Cristina, Peter, Auristela Carrasquel, Sal Ragusa, Ryan (me!), Jerry, Mariana, and Alain Mokbel).

A candid shot (only Ida & Katynna realized!).
From L to R: (Ida, Katynna, Auri, Sal, Melissa, Ryan, Yvan, Cristina, Shane, and Peter).

What follows are photos of our drinking spree that afternoon. We started off at Oregano's Pasta Market, and moved on to some bar named Patty's?? in the Byward Market. Can't really remember. Forgive me, but alcohol DOES kill brain cells, and DOES cause short-term memory loss.

The first photo is Alain and I drinking at Oregano's. That's the CHUM radio/TV station across the street in the background. They were filming something that day, but it certainly wasn't us. Man, did I ever want to be on TV!! The second shot is Al and I again, reclining on our bendable chairs. What a novelty! We could recline all the way back to a 90 degree position. Turns out they're a real fad. You can find them at Marlowe's, in the West Island of Montreal - a wonderful neighborhood bar. Except for the cruising single professionals...

nyuk nyuk

Some watering hole in the Byward market. Katynna forced us to go there 'cause she knew some dude who worked at the place.
L to R: (Sal, Katynna, Ryan, Alain, Yvan, Cristina, Jerry, and Mariana).

It takes fewer muscles to smile than it does to lift a flag. :) This is one of the sexy Mexis, Mariana...

A pic of all three of the Sexy Mexis! We have from L to R: (Paulina, Peter, Alain, Mariana, and Cristina).
