The Saga of My California Dream

Some scenic photos of the California coast...

My first trip to California in December 1992 was with my parents and my sister, Anna. We flew into Los Angeles, rented a car and drove south to San Diego from LA. Then we drove all the way up the coast to San Jose where we met for a Christmas family reunion at my aunt and uncle's place. We stayed out west for two weeks.

My sister, Anna, and I. In this photo I am 14, and she is 13. We were staying at the Saga Inn in Anaheim for our first night.

We are approaching Big Sur for the first time. Since 1992, I've visited it again on my own twice more. What a beautiful place - you get lost in the wind and the waves and notice nothing else but the awesome beauty before you.

We stayed in Lucia, an extremely small village near Big Sur. We arrived so late that the restaurant was closed and it was too dark and far to go somewhere else. We ate chips that night. This is my father standing in front of the cabin which was literally on the very edge of the cliff.

My second trip to California, alone, was the pre-cursor to my infamous "California Dream - July 15th, 1998". You can read The Saga of my California Dream here.

I stayed out there for another two weeks and celebrated the 700 day party out on the cliffs at Big Sur. The first picture is the nearby State Park. The second is Andrew Molera State Park, and there I am sitting on the bluff, partying with my bottle of cherry brandy (I partied alone - and it was exhilirating! See the bottle next to my right knee?

My third trip to California, in 1998, was for a month. It was sort of a consolation prize to myself to make up for my decision NOT to move on July 15th, 1998. A monumental decision for me, which was very difficult to make. I really had to swallow my pride. You do what you have to do, right?
I had just returned from working at Club Med Turkoise as a GO and didn't have a cent to my name. I sold my coin collection to buy a bus ticket to Toronto to catch my flight out west. Anyways, I went there with about $100 in my pocket. I bought the plane ticket with a Mastercard and bought a bathing suit and a toothbrush with my Hudson's Bay card. When I got to California, I actually got myself a job selling jewelry on the beach in Santa Cruz. I was so broke that I had to work to enjoy my vacation. Great experience. Live life to the fullest guys!

The backyard pool at my Aunt Trish & Uncle Steve's place in San Jose. Maxin' relaxin', the only way to do things. :)
