Did you know that today students worldwide are paying homage to obese squirrels? Fine, maybe it's not worldwide, but today the students from the 1999 Grade 10 class at Centennial Regional High School are celebrating Obese Squirrel Day. On this day in 1999, a severely overweight squirrel crawled into the school's electrical system and chewed through strategic wires powering the entire building. The squirrel's final tasty meal resulted in a power outage lasting for nearly 2 days. Classes, of course, were cancelled until electricity could be restored. Ashley O'Donnell, another Obese Squirrel Day fanatic, contends Hydro-Québec and Riverside School Board officials are hiding the real story, which is much more dramatic. Looking back, she had this to say, "Apparently an obese squirrel was running along an electrical wire and he was so heavy that he caused the wire to come loose and cause a power failure at Centennial and in the process was electrocuted."
